Brilliant. Truly a compelling and fabulous read. I'd read and loved her first two books, but this one far surpassed them for me.

All four main characters are well-realized, complicated, interesting women. As they negotiate new parenthood and the various changes in self, worklife, and relationships with family and partners, the characters must find their own solutions and Weiner avoids the easy answers. While Weiner does a wonderful job capturing the mundane practical dilemmas of diapering, cell phone calls from work, mothers-in-law, and so on, she also explores the challenges of how you reconceive your own family after becoming a parent, how you reshape a partnership when you go from being a couple to being a family, and how you revise your sense of self once you're a parent.

I especially appreciate how Weiner renders her main characters' male partners in nuanced tones, even while staying firmly focused on viewing the world through the four women's experiences.

This is a book I'll be giving my brother, my close friends, and my mother, among many others. It's absolutely not just for new mothers, though that's certainly one group of people who might enjoy the book. It is a compelling read for anyone interested in well-developed characters dealing with tightly plotted storylines in a well-realized physical world. Beautifully done.

WARNING if you find yourself lost in sadness related to losing a child, this may well be a healing book, but you should be prepared to cry.
In case you've forgotten what it's like to be a new mother, this will remind you ! I enjoyed the story but did get a bit tired of all the trials and tribulations of breast feeding ! Can't decide if author is for it or against it. LOL Jennifer's book is entertaining and keeps you wanting to find out what happens to the women.
Let me make this clear. I absolutely love the book. It is funny and dramatic. I read it over and over every now and again. I decided to order the audio book so my fiance and I could listen to it in the car together. He is not a big reader so this is my way of including him in books I love. The problem is that the audio book is missing a lot of scenes. There were scenes I absolutely loved in the book, but was surprised when they were no mentioned in the audio book. It was quite a disappointment. However, for the price it is still okay.
I read this a while ago and enjoyed it immensely. It's a story about women who are adjusting to having or not having kids. One of the characters is referred to as "Yoga Barbie" because of her blonde hair and perfect body, but she is struggling with her unemployed husband. Another woman is trying to get over the loss of her own baby, who died.

The most memorable character is Becky, who is probably modeled on Weiner herself - a spunky, overweight woman who meets life head-on and has an answer for everything. Becky's accounts of meeting her husband, the early days of their relationship, and their sexual problems in the beginning, are tragicomic. Her skirmishes with her mother-in-law are also entertaining and the outcome is enlightening.
I really enjoyed this book. I suppose it was "age appropriate" as the characters fall into their late 20s/early 30s, starting their families. The novel is pure chick-lit, with the undertone message being to never expect perfection. When you plan life out a certain way, you will be set up for disappointment. The book serves as a reminder to have faith in love, because no matter what life throws your way, a good support system is really all you need.
I hesitated on this purchase. But knew how is loved the authors beautiful writing. And my goodness how she delivered. Amazing. I admit, the first few chapters went a little slow, but I know how important those first chapters are in a book like this, the backstory, the setting, to a lyrical novel that comes to life as an experience right before your eyes. I beg for a follow up to this book. Beg. Not bc the story is a cliffhanger, it ends beautifully. But I feel like I want to be able to check in on these women that I feel are a part of my life now. Bye and bye..I will wipe my happy tears dry.
I love Jennifer Weiner, but this book is terrifying. It pretty much screams "If you want to become a fat, floppy, man-eating nag whose husband will either cheat or never understand your pain and exhaustion, have a baby!" A lot of reviews have said it would be PERFECT for expecting or aspiring mothers, but I think the opposite - expectant mothers, unless you want all of your fears confirmed, read this book after your child has turned two, because if you don't, you'll never want to have that baby. It certainly worked for me. The characters all have their interesting walks of life, and the plot was interesting, if not a little repetitive from the middle of the book onward. Also, all of the women, aside from Becky at times, were those annoying traditional types (you know the ones - "I have to breastfeed and take off a million years of work so I can bond and spend time with the baby, when in actuality it's driving me crazy and I wish I didn't have to stare at these same four walls all damn day") that you just love to hate in real life. But Weiner is a great novelist, one of a kind, so I forgave that. If you love her as an author, and you're looking for a reason NOT to reproduce, buy it and enjoy!
