The Little Book on Digital Marketing (Keyword Research) Joseph Stevenson 9781947215009 Books Reviews
Joseph Stevenson’s The Little Book on Digital Marketing is an invaluable resource to anyone interested in online platforms and marketing themselves, their company, or their clients’ companies. Stevenson outlines in each chapter the reason why it is important, while also giving case studies that provide application for the reader to see. He also ends each chapter with goals that are meant to help the reader learn from the concept. This organizational tool is very helpful when searching for specific topics within the book. Stevenson outlines the necessity of keyword research in the digital age, and offers advice on targeting whatever your intended audience may be. Laced with advice from various experts in the field, this book is jam-packed with useful information that is offered in palatable form. Stevenson also offers numerous citations at the end of each chapter, and a comprehensive chapter dedicated to resources at the end of the book, which are useful to further explore the concept of digital marketing and keyword searches.
This book is a must-have for beginning, or continuing, to use the Internet for business. I highly recommend this book, and I look forward to Stevenson’s next nine books in this ten book series!
Digital marketing can present an exhaustive and challenging learning curve, especially for someone who holds no experience or background in the subject. The Little Book on Digital Marketing (Keyword Research) sets out to be an introductory primer for the digital rookie, as well as a long-term consultant resource. In this volume, the first of a ten book digital marketing series, Joseph Stevenson lays out a course to assist and improve the reader’s understanding as well as their ability to utilize the internet to promote service and products as they relate to ‘keywords’.
Over the course of nine chapters, Stevenson presents a systematic overview of what ‘keywords’ are as they apply to search engines and how to most effectively utilize them for your business. He discusses how to identify and select the best words, which to avoid, the challenges some words present, and how to employ them to establish a marketing plan, improve digital visibility, and heighten site traffic.
Each of the chapters is structured to introduce a key term, define it, explain how it works, why it is useful to understand, and ends with a case study to provide a real world example of application. This method works quite well for someone like myself who had little to no knowledge of the subject matter prior to reading. While the premise may initially present itself as a hurdle to the newcomer, it’s actually much less complicated than it sounds. Keywords are simply words or phrases that someone searching for a product may type into a search engine, and which business owners may use to highlight their existing service or product. Here’s an example
One of the keywords Stevenson uses as a sample in one of the chapters is the word ‘egg’. If you type ‘egg’ into Google the first site to come up in the results is the site incredibleeegg.org. If you were someone who wished to open a business selling eggs in your area, and you launched a website to advertise, you would likely consider using the word ‘egg’ as one of your keywords. The problem with this is that if someone simply typed ‘egg’ into their search bar they would have very little chance of actually finding your site due to more popular sites, as well as a number of other important reasons that Stevenson addresses directly in the same chapter.
Using the word ‘egg’ to market your egg-selling website will only bring you into competition with all the other sites using the same term, and since it is a very broad term, and without the use of other keywords or keyword phrases, your digital marketing may not have the impact you’re hoping for.
This is where his advice on peripheral and suggested keywords help to improve your visibility instead of just getting lost in the great number of other sites incorporating the same keywords and similar language that you are. He also explains how you can use the media and copy on your webpage to improve your visibility, and how your choice of words can make or break your marketing dollar. He even offers guidance on how to cater your business directly to your keywords in order to maximize that marketing. There are a number of approaches and tools available and not every approach is right for every site.
I found it to be a very effective introduction to keyword research and can certainly see how it will be even more useful to consult in the future. By laying out a number of useful sites and tools for performing keyword research within the book, as well as how to use them, Stevenson is essentially providing a textbook or how-to manual for the reader.
Is the book perfect? No. There are several sections where the author assumes reader knowledge that I just did not have. This is where my personal inexperience may have colored my reading. Someone with even a beginner’s knowledge in the material may have no difficulty at all.
The book is also obviously written by someone in the Search Engine Optimization (SEO) industry. Many of the chapters, particularly the later ones, really delve into detailed theory and are laid out as if being written to an SEO peer. He addresses a great number of topics which build on each other - keyword volume; keyword difficulty; costs per click; algorithm optimization; broad phrases versus exact matching, etc. It results in several chapters of accumulated principles that read like a technical manual. It wasn’t unwieldy, and I was able to follow along, though I think it could have been presented in a slightly more readable format. Once again, more knowledgeable readers may not have any difficulty at all.
Interestingly, despite the vacuum of ignorance I came to this book with, I walked away with a solid understanding of how keyword research works, and how to optimize it for my own digital marketing interests. I would recommend this book to people interested in dipping their toes into learning the ins and outs of ‘keyword research’ as well as the veteran looking for a solid reference manual. Stevenson set out to provide all the tools the reader will need, and I think The Little Book on Digital Marketing (Keyword Research) succeeds in achieving just that.
People like myself are sometimes drowning in this technology driven marketing era. So I picked up this book to help me figure out how to navigate my new business, and i was not disappointed!
Joseph provides you with a free flowing theoritcal foundation that helps you understand your marketing tools and audience to help you succeed and stay succesful, rather than giving you a generic outline to just follow.
In this book he discusses keywords. The importance of specific keywords, how to create them or utilize pre-existing ones, and when to use them to boost your company's success.
Recommending this too all my friends!
You may think a book on "keyword search" might be boring. But Joseph Stevenson has managed to create on of the most engaging books on digital marketing and keyword search I've ever read. He has an easy style of writing that makes key concepts easy to understand for newbies as well as seasoned marketers. This is not a book exclusively for high-powered marketers and advertising pros hoping to get an edge over the competition. While "The Little Book on Digital Marketing" is a great asset for digital marketers and professionals it is just as useful as mom and pop shops and budding entrepreneurs hoping to take their business to the next level in digital.
I highly recommend this book. Stevenson draws from his years of experience as an entrepreneur and business owner to solidify market strategy and help readers conceptualize their own path to digital success. What is great about "The Little Book on Digital Marking," is that it is a quick read that provides comprehensive digital marketing information, actionable ideas and real-life case studies that enables the reader to put what they have learned into practice. Even though this is a paid review, I really am glad I read this book! It is a gem for digital marketers, entrepreneurs, and businesses everywhere. You will not be disappointed. Great read.
