3.5 starsI picked this book up as it was listed as one of Meredith's top ten favorite top ten modern take-offs of P&P. Although I found some of the story a sweet and squeaky clean romance there were parts which annoyed me.
The biggest rub was this Sylvie's and her 2 sisters' almost steady diet of junk food. I am not a model of good health in all my eating habits but the references to what they were eating, the amount and how often were pathetic. Coke and pop-tarts for lunch the first day of teaching?
As the story description tells you there are many references to the movie Sound of Music and other allusions to P&P. The story has a vague similarity to P&P in that the male protagonist insults Sylvie the first day of school and then another male teacher fills her ear with how bad Evan Dane is and how he has ruined his (Ben's) life...love life that is. Time goes by with both basically ignoring the other and then a major misunderstanding when Evan attempts to tell Sylvie how he feels.
Any of us who have had teaching experience will wonder at this "teacher's" approach to lesson plans, to grading, etc. but it works for her in this story. Plus she has success in both a this one-year experience (chosen in a "deal" with God so as not to crash land in a plane ride) and in coming to realize that she has mistaken Evan's motives and actions for far too long in his snub of her back in the fall.
There are many comical moments between the three sisters as well as in the classroom but also some sage advice gathered as the students put together a book on wisdom gleaned from life.
While I enjoyed this I can't say it rose to a high level of esteem. There was very little of those electrical moments, of sexual chemistry working for me and nary a moment of angst.

Must've Done Something Good Cheryl Cory Books Reviews
This was an excellent book. Well written, easy to read and characters that are easy to like. Her commentary on classic literature and some popular christmas carols gave me a whole new insight and I now look at the pine cone scene in 'the sound of music' with new eyes.
The only issue I have is that this is yet another version of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice. I love P&P and have enjoyed other versions-on-the-theme previously released (like Bridget Jones). But when are authors going to realise that this destroys the plot for the reader; as you know what's going to happen! I think it can be agreed that Pride and Prejudice reproductions have been done to death! The book was perfect the first time, it doesn't need to be re-written.
I did enjoy it though (as this is one of the better reproductions of P&P) and look forward to the next book this author produces. I just hope she can come up with an original story line and not just reproduce a timeless classic.
In this book, we meet and get to spend time with Sylvie, and her circle of family, friends and acquaintances. Sylvie is naive, quirky and so easy to like. During a scary airplane flight, Sylvie promises to do something good with her life. Experiencing boredom as a newspaper reporter, Sylvie decided to try a new challenge. She accepted a teaching position at an under-funded Catholic High School. Blundering a bit at first, Sylvie developed meaningful relationships with many students and fellow staff members. Add to all of this an obsession with The Sound of Music and a cast of unique characters. A light and pleasing read.
I'm trying to think of a word besides sweet. Charming? Touching? Uplifting?
Sweet, it turns out, is the best word I can find for Must've Done Something Good by Cheryl Cory that combines a coming-of-age story with romance, The Sound of Music and Pride and Prejudice.
A scary plane ride convinces 25-year-old Sylvie O'Rourke to quit her boring job as a newspaper reporter and do something "good" with her life, which leads to becoming an English teacher at St. Matthew's, a financially strapped Catholic high school. The book title is taken from a song in the Sound of Music, the favorite movie of Sylvie and her two sisters.
Sylvie's trials as a first-year teacher are entertaining with her witty narration. She becomes friends with Ben, another young teacher, but doesn't understand why she is snubbed by the attractive fellow English teacher Evan Danes. Trying to figure out who she can trust in the school environment leaves her very confused. Discussions with her students sometimes energize her, while grading papers is deflating.
The relationships that develop between Sylvie and her students as they all try to understand themselves is truly wonderful. Sylvie's realistic appraisal of herself and her teaching skills are both funny and uplifting.
At times, the interaction between the teachers seemed more suited for young teens than for adults and I had trouble seeing character development in anyone beside Sylvie and a few students. There were also a few times when the story hinted at other developments, but didn't follow through. There were several times, though, that the story really pulled through with some sweet surprises than made it very worthwhile.
Must've Done Something Good is a good read for adults and I would highly recommend it for young adults, who would gain a lot of insight into their teachers.
I loved this book! It was funny without trying to be funny....you know those books where the author is trying to be witty and edgey and ends up trying so hard it's just sad to read. I have about 10 half read books on my . I get bored and start a new book, meaning to go back and finish up the others ofcourse. But the highest praise I can give is I couldn't stop reading this book! I even laughed out loud...I even read a portion to two of my kids and THEY laughed out loud! ...I love Pride and Prejudice and this book is a modern spin of it, but done with originality. It was also clean, which I appreciated. I can't wait for the author to write another!
