This is a classic book. Although I did not read through this book, I used it as a reference when I was teaching myself linear systems theory. I very much appreciated its completeness in content and its mathematical rigor. Although the text can be overall challenging, but it develops the theory in detail and step by step -- so you won't get lost if you are determined to devote yourself to it and do not spare spending time. At the end of each chapter, the authors also shortlists some classic literature relevant to the content of that chapter. The reference lists also serve as a very good source for further reading. I recommend any serious person in dealing with systems and control to get this book.Product details

This book is definitely not well suited for use in a college engineering course. It is simply much too terse and does not present key concepts or ideas efficiently. I did myself a favor and bought Linear System Theory and Design by Chi-Tsong Chen, which is actually a surprisingly readable book. This book is not readable as a text book, I would recommend using it only as a reference.
Linear Systems by Antsaklis/ Michel is a comprehensive book on the subject. The best thing about the book is that it does not make too many presumptions about the background of the reader and starts with a detailed introduction to mathematical preliminaries before moving on to the heart of the subject. Proofs are given in detail, and the concurrent treatment of continuous and discrete time systems helps. The only negative point is the fact that no applications are stated in detail. However, the exercise problems contain a variety of them to satiate the inquisitive reader. A must have!
This must be a classic and timeless if I may say so. Few books ever come close to its level of excellence and clarity in introducing Control System and System Theory concepts and ideas, not to mention thoroughness in coverage of subjects and topics.
Even though this book dates back to 1965 reflecting the style and ethos of Electrical Engineering in the mid-1960's, please do not be fooled by its age. There is nothing whatsoever to render this book obsolete if it was written and published more than half a century earlier.
Why? It covers topics still very important and current for students and practitioners of Control Systems and System Theory, typically the State Space approach and Random Signals, which includes the important development and treatment of the classical Wiener Filter for handling noisy signals. Of course, one must not neglect key foundational ideas that are fundamental and basic to Control Systems such as frequency domain analysis via the Laplace transformed input-output differential equations and equivalently Z-transformed input-output difference equations for digital systems, also called discrete-time systems because the independent variable, time, is in discrete time (i.e., in discretized time steps). Schwarz and Friedland, the authors, leave none of the foundation materials out of the book. One point should also be made here - the book has an introductory chapter discussing the important ideas and theorems underlying Controllability and Observability in systems, concepts quite new at the time the book was written and published.
Finally, in spite of the tons of Control Theory books on the market these days, this book reflects a degree of clarity and thoroughness seldom found in most textbooks without invoking abstract concepts derived from Mathematical Analysis, an approach many books of that early era resorted to. This book stays with the fundamental and foundational concepts, demonstrating a lot of ideas with applications in examples worked out.
Although advanced topics such as Optimal Control Systems, Nonlinear Control Systems, Estimation Theory, Kalman Filtering, Robust Control Methods and Adaptive Control Theory, ideas and concepts that came around the end of 1960's or mid-1970's, are not covered due to the age of the book, the book does what it comes across best within its scope (Linear Systems), i.e.,deal with the underlying ideas and fundamentals, laying a strong foundation for those who try to master its materials.
The book also covers Fourier analysis (Fourier series for periodic signals and Fourier integrals and transforms for non-periodic ones), thus would be also be welcomed by students in Communication Systems and Signal Processing. I say all of this despite the age of the book.
I would strongly recommend this book, if ever re-published through Dover Publications or another publishing house, to serious students and practitioners (engineering designers, etc.) of Control Systems and Systems Theory, which covers broadly related disciplines such as Communication Theory and Signal Processing. It is also excellent for review whether one is a student or working professional, and also self-study for those aspiring to learn Control Theory from a scratch.
Really good condition
The Printing of the book looks as if it was made on a copy machine such that the typeface is a little fuzzy. Other than the printing, the authorship of the book is well done with many theorems and proofs. This book is recommended for graduate students or anyone in academia. Practicing engineers will find it useful only if one can understand and appreciate such rigorous theory.
