i like to read books like this in between my really smutty books for some tamer love scenes but this one just didnt do it for me. it was really slow and i never really felt like the main characters connected. roderick (and to begin with i dislike names that dont just roll of my tongue while i read)comes home from war scarred and crippled and with a horrible attitude. michaela is a girl from a family in need of money and when the rich lord chooses another for his wife, she turns to roderick as a last resort. the only interaction she has with him is negative but all of the sudden shes head over heels in love with him and dying to make love to him. theres an underlying story of curses that never really gets addressed until the end when out of nowhere the devil shows up and crazy events happen. im all for paranormal romance but this was just silly. i didnt really like this book and im even contemplating returning it for a refund. sorry but im not recommending it high on my list of must reads.

Excellent reading
I was a bit skeptical about buying this book but I am pleasantly surprised and thankful that I did. I enjoyed reading this wonderful romance.
I enjoyed reading this book.
I love darker stories that keep you guessing. Is the hero good or bad? Basically a Beauty and the Beast story. The hero is not always dashing and the heroine is not the belle of the ball. They both have a lot to overcome. Very good story.
I am really enjoying all her books. They have everything in them that I find interesting and at times keeps me on the edge of my seat. They are not your typical romances, they have twists and turns.
I do enjoy the battles, and the real types of people that she has in her novels.
As a big reader of all things Historical, in fiction and non fiction, I do give this author 5 stars.
I loved 95% of this book but the ending introduced a paranormal aspect that I felt didn't belong and it would have been so much better without it. Other than that, I loved the author's writing style and really felt the characters and what they were going through. I am a huge fan of beauty and the beast type stories and this one delivered big time. Roderick was the perfect scarred and tortured hero and Michaela was the right lady to bring him back from the dark side. Hugh and Leo added an interesting dimension to round out the story. If the paranormal ending didn't exist I would have given this book 5 stars.
I loved these people from the beginning. Rodrick, beaten down emotionally as a child by his father to coming home from Herculea a maimed warrior. Michaela's acceptance of Rodrick though she entered the arrangement with him out of spite for having been jilted by another. Precious little Leo, everyone's baby, was so adorably written. And Hugh, I so want Hugh to have his own story. Such a faithful friend to Rodrick and "uncle" to Leo. This is the first book I've read by Heather Grothaus and really enjoyed her writing style.

Romance can frequently be predictable. While there were predicatable elements in this one, there were twists that I didn't see coming. Very refreshing.

The only reason this doesn't get 5 stars is because I was slightly disappointed in the ending. A little too paranormal for me and it almost sounded like Rodrick never took off his boots, EVER, after the "event". I found that very odd.
